When a small WordPress site stalls in Google Search Console, people usually blame crawl budget or soft 404s. Fair topics β but a quieter mess sits in plain sight: the XML sitemap.
On sites under a few hundred URLs, the sitemap is often the clearest signal you give Google about which pages you still stand behind. When it is noisy β redirects, noindex pages, wild lastmod dates β you get the classic combo: sitemap coverage looks fine while Discovered - currently not indexed keeps growing.
This is the triage I use on freelance audits. Soft 404s are a separate problem; here we stay on sitemap hygiene vs indexation status.
What an XML sitemap is (and is not)
A sitemap is a list of URLs you are willing to have discovered and considered for indexing. It does not :
Force indexing
Override a noindex or robots block
Fix thin or duplicate content
Replace internal links
Google uses it as a discovery and freshness hint. If the list is trustworthy, Google leans on it.β¦
