I was just rewatching the Conspiracy episode of TNG and noticed something strange about the joke that Geordie tells Data. The punch line of the joke is "try doing that in hyperspace". I think that is the only time I've heard anyone in ST use the term "hyperspace".
Typically ships travel great distances using warp drive. They don't enter hyperspace like in Star Wars or some other space franchises. In ST they often use the term "subspace" for stuff like communication. So why did they use hyperspace for the joke?
