It is not in dispute that John Powell Morgan III fatally shot Scott Dingman in Boulder City in May 2021.

But was it self defense, as Morgan, 40, has said from early on, or was it murder?

On Monday morning, criminal court proceedings kicked off with the goal of answering that question. Morgan was arrested by Boulder City police on Saturday on suspicion of murder in Dingman’s killing some five and a half years after the fact.

As a result, Morgan appeared via video teleconference during an appearance in Boulder City Justice Court in front of Justice of the Peace Gregor Mills.

Mills set bail at $1 million.

“I do find that bail is necessary,” Mills said.…
