Thomas Tuchel has never been inclined to place much faith in the most famous right-back at his disposal, Trent Alexander-Arnold, once of Liverpool, now of Real Madrid, and – back in an England shirt – still capable of changing games in the blink of an eye.
England always looked likely to defeat a beleaguered Czech Republic team down to 10 men with just 25 minutes played, but it still required one man to conjure the moment of inspiration in this Nations League tie. This was the first cap in 15 months for the right-back now known simply as “Trent” in an England shirt – as well as his Real Madrid jersey – rather than the six syllables of his surname. With the game level at half-time, two minutes into the new half, he twice won the ball before landing a cross on the head of Anthony Gordon for the first goal.
Will the Alexander-Arnold with England experiment survive?…
