Most IAM concepts translate cleanly across AWS, Azure, and GCP: roles, policies, scopes, the vocabulary differs but the shape is the same. One GCP feature genuinely does not have a clean native equivalent on the other two: IAM Conditions, which let you attach an expression directly to a role binding so access is granted only when that expression evaluates true. Here's what it actually does, and when it's worth reaching for.
The problem it solves
Standard IAM grants access until someone remembers to revoke it. A contractor given temporary project access, an on-call engineer who needs elevated permissions only during an incident, a role that should only apply from a specific resource, all of these normally require either a manual revocation step someone has to remember, or a separate automation pipeline to enforce the restriction.β¦
