I’m 27 and currently work in politics in Louisiana. My current job is wrapping up, and I’m facing what feels like one of the biggest career decisions of my life.
I have two potential opportunities:
Option 1: Stay in Louisiana — ~$90K
I’d work as a political director on a governor’s campaign, essentially continuing the type of work I’m doing now.
Pros:
I already have a strong professional network and have built a reputation here.
I genuinely enjoy state and local politics. The work is fast-paced, exciting, and different every day.
There’s a potential long-term career path: governor’s campaign → administration → lobbying or political consulting.
Lower cost of living, allowing me to save and invest more easily.
I’d be a bigger fish in a smaller pond.
Cons:
I’d be staying in my comfort zone.
Sometimes I feel like my personal life lacks excitement.
Lower salary and potentially fewer opportunities to experience something completely new.
Option 2: Move to Washington, D.C.…
