The titular Stepfather is an identity-assuming serial killer who marries a widow with a teen daughter. He has killed his previous family and changed his identity.

Terry O'Quinn plays the antagonist with such a layered performance, much has been said about his role. Jill Schoelen, who plays Stephanie, is another major standout in my book. It's a testament to the writing, and the actress, that the character is so fleshed out and organic. Proactive and perceptive, she has a lot and grit and heart, a fighter who remains a believable teen girl.

I've always loved this movie too because it's a great snapshot of 80s America. For a horror movie, it's oddly cozy and comforting, even as it critiques conservative politics and the ideal of the nuclear family.

Would be great to see this movie on the Criterion Channel.
