This is not a how to fix new pitch marks question.
I was golfing at Paiute golf course in Vegas this past week and met a regular who was adamant about poking two holes in old brown ball marks left on the green. He said that the ball compresses the air underneath the grass and kills it causing the brown mark. Made sense to me...
Common knowledge now, not to push in and lift up on new ball marks. Push the grass back towards the middle and tamp down.
What about old pitch marks? Can poking holes for air in the old marks really help repair the green?
